CMS Bands
Hawk Ensemble
Hawk Ensemble is an ensemble comprised of the top middle school musicians at Cheney MS. This ensemble also includes the top percussionists from the percussion class. This group performs concerts throughout the year including: the Veteran’s Day Assembly, the CMS v. Westwood football game, large group festival, and occasionally goes on tours to the elementary schools.
Blue and Orange Band
This ensemble is comprised of 7th and 8th graders that are continuing to progress on their instruments. Students in this group may be new on their instrument or continuing from previous years. This class continues to develop on fundamentals and provide musical challenges that were not present in beginning band. This ensemble performs concerts throughout the year and participates in large group festival.
Beginning Band
This ensemble is compromised of mostly 6th grade students. It is open to any beginning band student at CMS and focuses on reinforcing what they learned in elementary music. This group performs in concerts throughout the year and is the showcase group at the 5th grade combined concert at the end of the year.
Jazz Band
Jazz Band is a zero hour class that meets before school (6:50-7:40 M-Th and 7:50-8:40 on Friday). This group has many concerts throughout the year performing alongside the sister middle school and high school jazz ensembles. This group also travels to jazz band festivals and competitions in and out of state.
Percussion
This class is designed for 7th and 8th grade students to get specific training on the various percussion instruments. This class is made up of two groups of students that perform with the Hawk Ensemble and the Blue and Orange Band. This group also performs at the regional solo and ensemble festival and the district percussion ensemble concert.
